The Tri-State Area’s Top Solar Installers

We Are Named A Top Rated Solar Contractor in PA | 2022 Solar Power World List

If you're looking for a top rated solar contractor in PA, third-party recognition matters — and TerraSol Energies has earned it.

Chadds Ford, PA, Aug. 4, 2022 — Despite concerns over supply chain interruptions and tariff investigations, the U.S. solar industry saw record solar and energy storage demand in 2021.

TerraSol Energies can attest to this, having one of its busiest years yet. Solar Power World has recognized the company's installation success by ranking TerraSol at No. 324 on the 2022 Top Solar Contractors list.

top rated solar contractor in paThe Top Solar Contractors list is developed each year by industry magazine Solar Power World to honor the work of solar installers in the United States. Solar firms in the utility, commercial, and residential markets are ranked by the number of kilowatts installed in the previous year. Companies are grouped and listed by specific services, markets, and states.

“The utility-scale solar market, of course, puts up huge installation numbers each year, but the majority of workers in the industry are constructing projects in the commercial and residential markets, which continue to break records,” said Kelly Pickerel, editor in chief of Solar Power World.

“Over 85% of the companies on the 2022 Top Solar Contractors List primarily work in the residential and commercial sectors, and they all reported closing out the last year in a positive light.”

According to data released by energy research firm Wood Mackenzie — before recent federal decisions to prevent additional tariffs on imported solar panels — the United States is expected to install 11 GW less than originally predicted in 2022, due to continued supply chain constraints, price increases, and interconnection challenges.

Still, a survey of the 2022 Top Solar Contractors class found that 59% predicted their business would increase in the next year, with only 9% assuming business would decrease.

TerraSol employs just 8 workers who installed 1,610 kW of solar power in 2021. Since its founding in 2009, the company has installed 4,434 kW of solar. The family-owned and run business provides PA, NJ, DE, and MD with turnkey renewable energy solutions from consultation to design, construction, and ongoing operation of the system.

What Does Solar Cost in Pennsylvania?

Understanding the solar cost upfront is important before you evaluate solar companies. A 6 kW solar system costs about $14,280 in Pennsylvania. After applying the 30% federal solar tax credit, that cost drops to approximately $9,996 — a significant reduction in the upfront cost of going solar.

solar panel installation company in paThe federal solar tax credit — also called the federal tax credit or investment tax credit — allows solar system owners to deduct 30% of the cost of their solar panel systems from their federal income taxes.

This applies to both residential solar and commercial solar installations. The 30% federal income tax credit is set to end on December 31, 2025, so acting sooner reduces your solar investment risk.

The average payback period for solar systems is now 8 to 12 years, depending on system size, energy savings, and local utility rates. After that, solar panels save money every month for the remaining life of the system.

Beyond the federal tax credit, Pennsylvania solar incentives include net metering, solar renewable energy credits (SRECs), and the High Performance Building Program for qualifying projects.

Net metering allows solar system owners to send excess solar energy back to the grid and receive credit on their electric bill. Pennsylvania solar incentives, combined with the federal tax credit, make this one of the strongest markets in the region for solar savings.

Solar Financing Options to Consider

solar panels save utility billsNot every homeowner or business can pay cash for a solar system. There are several solar financing options available to fit different budgets and goals.

Solar loans allow you to own the system outright and still benefit from the federal tax credit and all local incentives. This is typically the best route for maximizing long-term solar savings.

A solar lease or power purchase agreement (PPA) — sometimes called third-party owned systems — involves a solar panel company owning and maintaining the system while you pay a monthly rate for the solar energy it produces. These options lower or eliminate the upfront cost but also mean you don't own the system, so solar customers in this arrangement don't qualify for the federal tax credit directly.

Solar resources like the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) provide guidance on evaluating these options. When getting solar quotes, make sure you understand what each financing option means for your total solar cost and long-term energy bills.

How to Evaluate Solar Companies in Pennsylvania

Knowing which solar companies in Pennsylvania are worth hiring takes more than reading reviews. Here are the key things to verify:

Licensing and registration

In Pennsylvania, contractors performing home improvements must be registered with the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General. Verify that the contractor is licensed and insured before signing any agreement.

NABCEP certification

NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) certification is widely considered the gold standard for renewable energy professionals. Certified energy practitioners have documented their training, passed a rigorous exam, and committed to professional standards. TerraSol's NABCEP-certified team reflects this standard.

top solar companies near meEquipment and warranties

Reliable Pennsylvania solar installers offer high-quality solar products, transparent long-term warranties, and guaranteed solar production estimates. Ask for specifics on panel brands, inverter types, solar batteries, if applicable, and what happens if actual output falls short.

Local experience

An experienced solar installer knows local permitting processes, utility interconnection requirements, and how to maximize your solar panel systems given your roof, energy consumption, and location. Several highly rated solar installers operate in Pennsylvania, but not all have the same depth of local knowledge.

Track record

Look at completed solar projects, not just sales pitches. How much energy have they installed? How long have they been in business? How do solar customers rate them after installation?

When you evaluate solar companies, look for the right solar company that combines credentials, local presence, and a proven installation record. Not just the lowest solar cost quote.
