In 2017, Phoenix Contact began plans for their new North American warehouse in Middletown, PA. The company is heavily focused on renewable energy and wanted the building to reflect it.
In spite of a challenging design and pandemic delays, Phoenix Contact and TerraSol completed the 1MW photovoltaic solar system that achieved the goal of Net Zero certification.
The company is deeply committed to renewable energy, both through its component partner and in its mission statement. As a leading force in industrial technology, Phoenix Contact had set an ambitious goal: to become a carbon-neutral company by 2030. The new LCA building wasn’t just a warehouse. It was a statement. And it needed to reflect that.
Phoenix Contact approached TerraSol to help design and construct the LCA building—a state-of-the-art facility that would achieve Net Zero certification, meaning 100% of its energy needs must be supplied by on-site renewable energy.
Phoenix also wanted to partner with TerraSol to showcase the power of its proprietary components by integrating them directly into the solar system — turning the building itself into a live demonstration of its technology for clients visiting the site.
The project was enormous: 70,000 square feet and 1MW of solar power. TerraSol readily took on the challenge.
Beginning in 2017, TerraSol and Phoenix Contact collaborated to integrate solar technology with an existing on-site natural gas cogeneration plant. They engineered a hybrid solution in which solar powers the facility during the day and gas runs at night for maximum efficiency.
Despite COVID-19 delays, the teams used the pause to refine the design and secure PEDA and PPL grants, ensuring the 1MW photovoltaic solar system was built to the highest standards.
Launched in 2022, the system generates 1,241,235 kWh of clean electricity annually, cutting carbon emissions by nearly 2 million lbs and saving $150,000 in energy costs. The facility achieved Net Zero and LEED Silver certifications, standing as a premier example of sustainable design.
Additionally, the array is fully integrated with Phoenix Contact’s proprietary building management system, creating a live showcase of their clean energy technology for partners and visitors alike.
Phoenix Contact is actively exploring potential battery storage projects to further optimize its solar system—the next step in its journey toward truly carbon-neutral operations.
With a global network spanning more than 100 countries and a focus on electrification, automation, and sustainable infrastructure, they are well-positioned to lead by example. And TerraSol is proud to be their partner on that journey.
